Spring Activities on the Petrich Ranch

The routine changes so drastically with the different seasons on the Petrich Ranch. The calves are almost all born now and a good old fashion branding took place over the weekend. Calves are roped on some of the same horses that have packed so many to successful hunts. They are dragged by their hind legs to a branding fire where two ambitious workers wrestle and hold them down. This is an event that involves all the family and some area friends.

Irrigation is also on the agenda as it plays a critical role, in providing summer pasture and winter feed for our livestock. We are fortunate to have several creeks that supply us with ample water.

The bull elk are continuing to drop their antlers. Zane and Zander have found a number of ivory tipped sheds. The fall elk season promises to be exciting as we have observed many bulls in our hunting area.

These are just a few of the highlights of our busy life. Life isn’t always easy and peaceful like we all wish it were. Yes, we also have struggles and difficult days too, but thankfully we have a risen Savior, who sympathizes with our struggles. His name is Jesus! I don’t know where we’d be without His presence in our lives. Psalm 18:2 says: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold”. Spring Black Bear Season Opens In Montana

Spring black bear season opens in Montana today! We woke this morning to a layer of fresh snow on the high mountain peaks. Oh so beautiful, the vibrant green pastures leading up to the majestic templed hills. Zane actually spotted the first bear of the year, as he made a quick run to look for shed elk antlers. By the way, he found two nice antlers.

2016 Archery Elk Season Off To A Great Start!

Finally, after a long hot summer, archery elk season has arrived. The elk sign looks promising and the bulls are bugling. The elk had actually even broke into my luscious green hay pile just before we arrived at camp, and had left behind the lingering aroma of their presence. This is such an exciting time of year to actually live among the elk and to really get a feel for how awesome and majestic they really are. The morning of day four we were in pursuit of a great bull that really put on a show. We stayed with him until he finally stopped at a small tree that he shredded approximately thirty yards in front of James. Finally he couldn’t resist the temptation of the lonely cow, and walked and screamed his way right up to seven yards and a perfect double lung shot. This has got to be one of the most thrilling experiences in all of hunting. Our great God has really shown His handiwork in this special season. Tribute to Dave Miller

Rising Son Outfitters was saddened recently to receive news of the passing of a long time client and friend, Dave Miller of Cedarburg, WI. There aren’t words to describe the kind of person Dave was. Our first meeting with Dave was in 1984, when he unexpectedly drove into our yard during elk season and immediately fell in love with our ranch. When he found out that I was considering going into the outfitting business, he helped spread the news and was responsible for sending numerous clients our way. Over the course of the past thirty years, Dave also enjoyed many guided hunts; in fact had a hunt booked for this coming fall and was hoping to harvest his twelfth elk. Unfortunately, Dave didn’t make it that far and is instead residing with his Heavenly Father, with whom Dave had a personal relationship. I so appreciate Dave’s influence on so many, including my own family. He was always concerned more about others than himself. His love for God and his desire to live a life worthy of His grace was always evident. We won’t ever forget Dave Miller and the impact he had on so many. We will be forever grateful for all Dave has done to promote our outfitting business. May God bless his wife Kathy and the rest of his family.

Spring Bear Hunting Highlights for 2016

The month of May was very exciting as we enjoyed another spring bear season. The hunting was great and the company was even better. Zane joined us this year in his first spring season and guided a client to her first bear harvest. We renewed some acquaintances with some past clients and friends and were delighted to spend time afield with them.

Our clients harvested two fine bears, both of which were classic color phase in appearance. The largest bruin squared just under seven feet and had an interesting story behind his fifteen year old stature. We discovered after harvesting the bear that he had an ear tag placed by the Montana fish wildlife and Parks several years ago. The bear had been trapped near Livingston and was then transported to an area near West Yellowstone, Montana. Over the course of time the bear crossed two major rivers, the Gallatin and the Yellowstone, and traversed over fifty miles to his final destination where we made the harvest. The official skull measurements are not final yet, but the bear is definitely to the Montana state record books. Congratulations, Katie, for the bear harvest of a lifetime! The winter season in south central Montana has been average with some nice snow and mild temperatures. We are enjoying watching a lot of wildlife around the ranch ranging from bull elk to some nice mule deer bucks. There are a number of mature bulls that are wetting the appetites of Zane and Zander for finding the shed antlers in just over a month.

Predator control is also on the agenda this time of year. Zane is having a good winter by already knocking off 18 coyotes since elk season.
